The American Board of Obesity Medicine (ABOM) serves the public and the field of obesity medicine by maintaining standards for assessment and credentialing physicians. Certification as an ABOM diplomate signifies specialized knowledge in the practice of obesity medicine and distinguishes a physician as having achieved competency in obesity care
Your Support TEam
Part of the intake procedure is to complete a cardiac risk assessment. That includes taking a baseline ECG, a thorough health history, evaluating medications that you are taking, and health issues that may be exacerbated with exercise.
If it is determined that you have cardiac risk factors, a treadmill stress test will be ordered.
Exercise is a factor in this program along with a healthy diet. The support of the cardiologist is to ensure the exercise you perform is safe and effective
Age, a large neck size, an elevated body mass index along with a number of other factors such as window-rattling snoring can be contributing factors of sleep apnea.
Sleep apnea is a serious medical condition where your upper respiratory tract blocks itself off while we sleep, essentially preventing you from breathing. When you stop breathing in your sleep, your body will wake you up long enough to gasp for some air before falling back to sleep again.
Patients suffering from sleep apnea tend to find themselves constantly tired and fatigued. Our sleep specialist will assess whether you should get tested for sleep apnea.
During the weight loss journey, you may find yourself anxious and even depressed. You are on a journey, you are stepping out of your comfort zone. It can cause stress and anxiety.
If you find yourself feeling anxious, stressed or depressed you will not be left to fend for yourself. There is a psychiatrist on your weight loss team to help you through the rough patches, so you stay on track and achieve your goals.
Dietician and Nutritionist
As established on the diet page, losing weight is a matter of consuming less calories than you use. It also needs to be done in a way that is safe, effective and won’t leave you feeling hungry or weak.
The nutritionist on your team will develop a diet plan that is nutritionally balanced, will put your body into a fat-burning state, and leave you feeling satisfied at the end of each meal.
There is exercise, and then there is exercise performed properly with good form. Your exercise program will most likely contain a mixture of cardiovascular building activities (ie walking or riding a stationary bicycle) combined with resistance training being implemented during the course of the program.
The exercise kinesiologist is here to ensure that you know how to perform your prescibed exercises, safely and effectively.
